Electricity Savings

Tested Product Benefits

Windows represent approximately 20% of the total m2 of a building.

  • Every square meter window glass covered with our tested window insulators save approximately between 178 KWh - 356 KWh per year. (North & West facing buildings receiving direct sun have the highest results).
  • Multiply these KWh savings with the total m2 windows in your building to determine total KWh savings per year.
  • Multiply the KWh savings with the current price per KWh you are currently paying (The cost of electricity may triple in the next decade (source Fin24>Economy, 21/11/2008); Major Eskom clients who do not save electricity can expect to pay up to eight times as much for electricity from next year; (source Fin24> Economy; 14/10/2008).
  • The total number of square meter window glass probably equal the total number of light globes in use. If changing to energy efficient light bulbs makes sense, then obviously it must make even better sense to insulate the major thermal holes in your building! Plus you block up to 90% harmful UV rays; plus glare is drastically reduced; plus ample natural light enters through the insulating screen.

The figure below shows the annual electricity savings, in a South African context for a North facing building facade, at an electricity price of R 0.50/kwh. These savings were calculated based on an energy savings model developed by the international supplier and the holder of the patent. This graph demonstrates, as an example that a company occupying an office block with 2,000 m2 window glass, will save in the order of R 743,000 per annum in electricity costs, leading to a payback of 2.3 years. The annual saving in CO2 emissions for this building is in the order of 936,000kg. (These higher savings are achieved where the north an west facades receives minimum 200 days of direct sun)

How can electricity price increases be combated?

A building with 1000 m2 windows can attain the following savings after electricity price increases, by insulating the windows with our Window Insulators.

Penalties by Eskom for exceeding electricity saving targets are a definite cost factor to keep in mind. Add to this the loss of productivity, loss of income and the discomfort during anticipated black-outs by Eskom.
